Del Mar Rendezvous
1555 Camino Del Mar Suite #120
Del Mar, California 92014
(On the street level of the Del Mar Plaza)
(858) 755-2669

Okay, this review is long over due, but I must start with a disclaimer up front that my friend, Dan manages this place. Since I am all about supporting the local, small businesses instead of giant corporations like PF Chang’s and Roy’s, I suggest this place.

Anyways, I’ve been to this place twice so far. First with Dan, where I experienced the food and fell in love with it. I guess Dan wasn’t just all talk about the restaurant after all (hah no offense). Second, with my friend, Rikki where I got the whole restaurant experience. The food was still great, but realized this little restaurant gets freaking busy now since their recent popularity. With that sometimes service can be neglected due to the overload. Thankfully they are trying to adjust by adding more folks to the floor and a much needed waiting area (crazy, how they don’t have one).

FYI, they have vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free menus. Also, yummy wines at a decent price or their 1/2 price wine nights. Last but not least, get 20% off by signing up for their emails and special offers :D

Sesame Crusted Seared Ahi $12
Sushi grade ahi, seared on the outside and raw through the center; covered in a wasabi
aioli dressing atop a bed of spring mix lettuce with Rendezvous’ house vinaigrette

Oh man, I’m already a sucker for seared Ahi, but the taste goes to a new level when it is accompanied by wasabi aioli dressing. So yummy, I was licking the plate clean of that sauce hah :P

Steamed Pork Dumplings $8
Handmade dumplings filled with pork and green onion served in a steamer;
with a side of tangy and medium spice dumpling sauce

My friend, Rikki enjoyed it and thought it was yummy. However, if you plan on eating this tapas (as Del Mar Rendezvous likes to call their appetizers) nice and slow, then I suggest asking for the lid. Because you know cold dumplings are no bueno. Just looking out :D

Sauteed Vegetables with Konnyaku Noodles
$14
Sautéed baby bok choy, broccoli, carrots, baby corn, lettuce, bai ling mushrooms, black mushrooms, enoki mushrooms, green onion, white onion, and snow peas with Konnyaku noodles

Can you believe this is a gluten-free dish? Konnyaku noodles is made from a root vegetable from the same family as taro. Not only does it fool you into thinking you’re eating carbs, but it’s only 10 calories per serving with no fat and high in fiber. Cheers to that!

Also, the veggies were very fresh and yummy, especially the snow peas. If I could change one thing about it, I would make it spicy hah. But that is not a surprise coming from me :P My friend, Rikki really enjoyed it how it was though.

Walnut Shrimp $18
7 large lightly breaded shrimp sautéed with carrots and peas in a creamy, sweet white sauce topped by caramelized walnuts and atop a bed of steamed broccoli

Oh man, this was my favorite and apparently I am not alone. Not only is the shrimp juicy and big, but the sauce is addicting! If you’re going to cheat with a mayo base sause, then this is the one. I try to resist and only have one, but it was too yummy and I basically ate all 7 hah! You have been warned :P

Imperial Shrimp $18
7 large shrimp sautéed in a spicy soy glaze and presented
in a crispy egg noodle nest atop a bed of lettuce

Okay my second time around I thought I would try a spicy version. The spices weren’t crazy since it’s fusion and not Szechuan hah, but I still really enjoyed it and was wanting more. I feel like you just can’t go wrong with a shrimp dish here.

Chilean Sea Bass in a Yu Hsiang Sauce $22
8 oz filet of crispy Chilean Sea Bass in a garlic ginger sauce atop a bed of baby bok choy

Honestly, I don’t remember much about this dish except that it was good. But, I got this the same night as the Walnut Shrimp and the rest is history. I know, I’m crazy for loving shrimp > sea bass, hah :P

Mongolian Rack of Lamb
$26
14 oz of tender Australian Lamb oven baked with sautéed green beans, red bell pepper,
green onion, and white onion in a pungent sauce (8 bones)

Another favorite at the restaurant among the crowd. Oh man, I use to love lamb and order it all the time. I was so tempted to grab a piece and dig in since it was nicely cooked with some red in the meat. But, I held strong!

Mango Sorbet $5.95
A fresh mango shell filled with all-natural, fat-free sorbet and
topped with whipped cream and raspberry sauce

MmMmmm…what a nice way to end the meal! I heart mango! RAWR!

This food was complimentary and provided by the restaurant. I was not compensated for the review and all the opinions are my own.
