I’ve never been to Murrieta, and I had no clue they even had an old town. I love how food just makes me venture off to unknown territories. Anyways, Medi got a recommendation from a friend that Calhoun’s has some amazing BBQ. I like BBQ, but not as crazy about it like Medi. When we rolled in, right away we knew Calhoun’s was going to be good because we saw a huge pit just outside of the place. Like they say, “if it’s not smoked on a pit, it ain’t it.” ;)

As you can see, there is not much of an ambiance here. It’s pretty bare with just the essentials, which is fine by me because normally that is just a good sign of them just focusing on the food.

One of the first things I noticed before even looking at their menu was their sweet potato pie that was displayed on their counter. Wow, I can’t even explain how stoked I was to see that.

Sweet Potato Pie $3.50

So stoked, that I ate it first before we even got our food hah. I loved how it was a personal small pie and not just a slice like at most places. Crust lovers would be pleased. This isn’t something that is brought in from a bakery either, Mrs. Calhoun or their daughter personally bake these pies daily. Their sweet potato pie is super flavorful, moist, and just simply delicious. If I lived in the area, I would honestly just go here for the pie. That good folks! Mrs. Calhoun, you can seriously just open up your own sweet potato pie shop.

BBQ Chicken $9.95/half
Smoked Hot Links $6.95/per pound

Medi is a fan of BBQ chicken and he really enjoyed their chicken. Some parts were a bit dry, but for the most part the chicken was juicy and delicious. But personally, the chicken was too charred for me. I just couldn’t stop thinking about how much carcinogens must be present hah.

We got the BBQ sauce on the side so we can taste more of the meat and just in case the sauce wasn’t good. Thankfully, their sauce is good though! It’s not overly sweet with a nice hint of hickory. However, not too spicy either which wasn’t bad. Though you know I can always do spicier ;)

I also ordered a la carte a hot link which was nice and tasty. I prefer that as a “side dish” rather than cole slaw, beans, or french fries.

Five BBQ Baby Back Ribs $7.50

The second time around to Calhoun’s we checked out their baby back ribs. OMG, so good! Nom, nom, nom. Even though their ribs are a bit charred too, I didn’t care. This really was my first fall off the bone baby back ribs experience. Yes, I am not kidding the meat just falls off the bones. I haven’t been able to experience that outside of my mom’s cooking. Wow, I am so ordering a full rack of their baby back ribs next time. Also, I love how the meat is so flavorful with a nice smoke to it without the sauce. Most places try to cover up their poor bbqing skills by drenching their meat in sauce. At Calhoun’s you don’t need the sauce at all to enjoy it. My tip, save some calories from the sauce and just gorge on their sweet potato pies instead heh ;)

BBQ Brisket Baked Beans $2/individual

Good baked beans, but once again I rather eat a hot link as a side hah

French Fries $2.95

Honestly, I don’t remember much about their fries. Looks good, but obviously wasn’t a huge fan if my mind is going blank.

The man himself bbqing it up! FYI, this pit has been passed down in the family. How cool is that? No wonder their food taste so good :D

Next time, I want to check out their pulled pork and brisket, heard some great things about it too. However, I can’t image it being better than their baby back ribs. It was just that good, but I guess I will have to wait and see.
